Hello West Virginia. Look What We Make! There's a lot of talk around about buying things that are 'Made in America'. Let's take that idea one step further and buy things that are 'Made in West Virginia' whenever possible. Look at the wealth of products, beautiful artistic works, foods, wines, and more that are produced here in the Mountain State. If we all do our part and patronize our own, then we are helping out the state's economy as well as the people and businesses that depend upon us for their livelihood. We're all in this together, you know!
Did you know that Kingsford Charcoal is made in Parsons? Next time you go to the store to buy charcoal for that outdoor barbeque, buy Kingsford!
How about wine? Like it? We have some excellent wineries in the state, so check them out. You can have a lot of fun as well as taste wine selections at many of the fairs and festivals around the state. The WV Wine & Arts Festival held in Martinsburg over Memorial Day Weekend found lots of new customers for the Mountain State's wineries as did the Berkeley Springs Uniquely West Virginia Weekend held in April.
Remodeling? Want hardwood floors? Bruce Hardwood Flooring is made in Beverly. There you go - buy Bruce! When it comes to arts and crafts, our Appalachian heritage shines through the many lovely works of our state's artists. Look at the list of artists on the right. You can find such unique and beautifully made creations, and this list isn't nearly complete. A visit to Tamarack near Beckley will introduce you to to all things 'Made in West Virginia'. Be sure to be there around lunchtime. The food is simply delicious.
Tamarack, located off I-77 outside of Beckley You may have already read about West Virginia's glass history on the Antiques, Arts, and Collectibles page of this issue of West Virginia Life and Recreation, so you may be aware of the factories like Blenko and Fenton as well as some of the glass artists in the state. Thinking about buying new dinnerware for yourself or as a wedding gift? Yes, you guessed it, Fiestaware is made in West Virginia!
Future articles here will feature more in depth looks at various producers of all-things West Virginia, but take some time to surf the links on this page and see what is here. You'll be amazed and pleasantly surprised, I'm sure. If you know of other artists, manufacturers, food and beverage producers, or anyone you think should be listed on this page, please let Lars know.
