From Summer 2006... ROCKIN' AND ROUSIN' SUMMER THEATRE Summertime in West Virginia is alive with a myriad of events, ongoing exhibits, and performances. If you check out the event calendars published by the West Virginia Department of Tourism and also check local media, it is obvious that you could travel around the state every day and find something exceptional. One of our best summer treats is Theatre West Virginia located in Raleigh County near Beckley in Grandview, WV. Their productions are renowned for remarkable acting, performances, music, and sets in the delightful outdoor Cliffside Amphitheatre. West Virginia's history and culture are unique, and Theatre West Virginia continues to shine each summer season as they present two pieces of that history and culture, Honey in the Rock and Hatfields and McCoys, to folks from across the U.S. and other countries, as well as state residents who come each summer to enjoy these rousing productions. Theatre West Virginia was founded in 1955 under the name West Virginia Historical Drama Association. Their mission was to present WV's culture to as wide an audience as they could. Their first production, Honey in the Rock, opened in 1961. It is the story of the birth of the state of West Virginia during the Civil War. In case you aren't aware, we are the only state created during that conflict. Scrappy and determined mountaineers broke with their Virginia farmer neighbors and formed their own state, loyal to the Union, in 1862. "Honey in the Rock" has it all - drama, comedy, great music, and even romance. In 1970, Hatfields and McCoys opened to immediate acclaim. Nearly everyone is familiar with the story of the feudin' and fightin' Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky. This production is a historical drama that chronicles the battles and the bloodshed. Books have been written about the feud, but here you'll get the story in one magical musical performance. For families with little ones who want something more appealing and appropriate for very young children, Disney's Beauty and the Beast is also presented this season. The same high quality performances continue with this production. You just can't find a more special place to enjoy one of our summer evenings in the mountains than at Theatre West Virginia's Cliffside Amphitheatre. Take advantage of the opportunity this summer!
From Winter '06... SKI BY THE MOON THIS WINTER
The summer fairs and fall festivals are over, and winter is on the way to West Virginia. It's time to start thinking about roaring fires, crisp snowy days, and for many residents of the Mountain State and surrounding states, skiing. Downhill skiing is so popular, and we boast several great ski areas that are known regionally and nationally as good places to go. There is another spot, though, that may not get as much attention, but it offers a lot of unique experiences for those who wish to take a break from downhill or for those whose favorite winter sports adventure is cross country skiing or snowshoeing. White Grass is located near Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls State Park. In operation since 1979, White Grass offers a more laid-back atmosphere, a fantastic natural foods cafe, cross country ski school, snowshoeing, guided high country tours, telemark skiing, a backcountry ski specialty shop, and more. There are over 50 km of maintained trails. Special Nordic Events are planned throughout the season, but one in particular caught our eye. Focusing around each month's lunar glare, four Full Moon Skiing Trips will be offered on the following dates: Dec. 4, Jan. 3, Feb. 2, and March 3. Nighttime cross country skiing is truly an exhilarating and special experience, and here is the perfect place to have that experience. White Grass is open from 9:00 am until dark seven days a week during the winter. They will open in December and should stay open until March. For the exact opening date, you may call 304-866-4114. Take advantage of this spot this winter. You'll be glad you did!
